Asda, one of the UK retail giants, has developed a new way to recycle plastics - using 90,000 plastic water bottles to resurface the car park of its Wakefield mall in New Zealand!
These plastic water bottles that were originally going to landfills or incinerators are now turned into parking lots and re-invested in the plastic recycling value cha.
These plastic water bottles are ground into small pieces and mixed with asphalt to form tarm.
Asda says the reuse of these waste plastic bottles helps reduce the use of oil, thereby reducing the carbon footpri.
The company said the program could be rolled out to other parking lots in its stor.
"This is a truly innovative use of plastics that is temporarily difficult to recycle otherwise, and it demonstrates our commitment to finding sustainable alternatives across the chain," said Daniel Hargreaves, construction manager at As.
Asda, a British company founded in 1949 and acquired by Wal-Mart in 1999, is the first supermarket in the UK to ban the use of artificial colours and flavours in its own food and soft drin.
