On June 27, 2022, the European Union adopted Decision (EU) 2022/997, deciding to include perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS), its salts and related compounds on the POPs removal list in Annex A of the Stockholm Convention in
.
At its final meeting, June 6-17, the pact group agreed to a global ban on PFHxS
.
The purpose of this decision is to amend Annex I of the Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP) Regulations to include PFHxS as a substance subject to certain restrictions
.
It is expected that such substances will be included in Annex A of the Convention by the end of 2022
.
As a party to the Convention, China will take corresponding actions in the future to prohibit the production and use of such substances
.
PFHxS is one of the perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFAS) that has received increasing attention in recent years due to its persistence in the environment and higher bioaccumulation in humans
.
"PFHxS is often used as a replacement for PFOS in firefighting foams, food contact papers, water repellents, and cleaning and polishing products," said Oziel, a reporter for Chemical Watch
.
ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) has put it on the list of substances of very high concern (SVHC) in July 2017
