Poland, the only EU country not committed to carbon neutrality by 2050, is on track to achieve this
goal by 2056, according to a study conducted Wednesday by the Polish National Economic Research Institute (PEI).
Currently, nearly 80% of Poland's electricity comes from burning coal, so it will take more time and money to move to a zero-emission economy
.
The goal also faces fierce opposition from the powerful coal miners' union, whose leaders deny global warming and recently blocked plans to close more coal mines as part of
an industry restructuring.
Based on the World Economic Forum's Energy Transition Index and other EU countries' assumed years of decarbonization, Poland could achieve climate neutrality
by 2056, analysts at PEI said.
The PEI added that Poland could become climate-neutral by 2067 if conditions are
unfavorable.
Poland plans to reduce the share of coal in electricity production to 56-60%
by 2030.
Poland sees natural gas as a transition fuel, which will help Poland ensure a stable supply of electricity ahead of the construction of planned offshore wind farms and nuclear power plants
