The Export-Import Bank of China announced financing services for the construction of a domestic submarine cable project in Papua New Guinea, aiming to connect 15 major coastal cities
.
Papua New Guinea's investment minister William Duma said the Kumul domestic submarine cable project will be undertaken by Chinese company Huawei in preparation
for the Coral Sea Cable System (CSCS).
The network will operate between Port Moresby, Alotau, Popondetta, Lae and Madang and is expected to be completed
in February 2019.
The state-owned Kumul Telikom Holdings Limited (KTHL) will own, manage and operate the entire submarine cable system
.
Interestingly, in July 2018, Australia's Vocus Group invited Nokia's Alcatel submarine networks division to build a 4,000-kilometer CSCS cable that connects Australia with Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands
.
The A$137 million (US$101 million) CSCS submarine cable project awarded to Vocus by the Australian government in June is expected to be completed
by the end of 2019.
The project was originally undertaken by China's Huawei, but the Australian government canceled the contract
on security grounds.
