Herbal Essences will be the first P&G brand to use Eastman Renew molecular recycled plastic in packaging
    .
The company announced that, in conjunction with U.
    S.
Recycle Day on November 15, five shampoo and conditioner lines will feature primary packaging made from Eastman Renew resin, with 50 percent of its ingredients certified mass-balanced Recycle plastic

    .

Eastman Renew materials are produced through Eastman's molecular recycling technology, using waste plastics that are difficult to recycle or otherwise end up in landfills
    .
Eastman has developed two different technologies, called carbon regeneration technology and polyester regeneration technology

    .
The two main differences between them are the type of raw material, or the material input used, and the output produced

    .
Carbon recycling technology can process a wide range of plastic waste (all types except PVC) as input, while polyester recycling technology uses a range of polyester materials as processing input

    .
"We're excited to see our partnership with P&G reach consumers with the launch of these Herbal Essences packaging," said Chris Layton, director of sustainability for Eastman Plastics and Circular Solutions

    .

Following the initial release of the new packaging, two new collections will be launched in January 2022
    .
These will also include standardized How2Recycle labels to clarify recycling instructions and encourage recycling

    .

As Herbal Essences Chief Scientist Rachel Zipperian points out: “We all have a responsibility to make changes to create a more sustainable future where plastics are truly recycled, reused and out of nature
