Recently, OPG (Ontario Power Generation) announced a partnership with Kiashke Zaaging Anishinaabek (KZA) to jointly develop a microgrid system
.
This solar cell storage and grid technology will help reduce KZA's diesel use
.
The microgrid will combine
renewable solar power, battery storage and microgrid control technologies with diesel generators that currently meet the full energy needs of communities.
The project is expected to reduce the use of diesel by around 110,000 litres per year, which equates to a reduction of approximately 340 tonnes of CO2 emissions
per year.
OPG will be responsible for managing contractors and overseeing the development, design, procurement, regulatory processes, construction, integration and commissioning
of microgrids.
Construction of the microgrid project is expected to begin in spring 2018 and be completed
by the end of the year.
Once the project is operational, KZA will have full ownership and operation of the microgrid
.
OPG has a proven track record of building and maintaining mutually beneficial working relationships with Ontario's Aboriginal communities that create economic opportunities, training and employment opportunities
.
OPG is currently working with Six Nations in Grand River to develop solar projects
.
This microgrid project is OPG's fifth development with indigenous communities
.
