Dutch grid system operator TenneT said on Monday that NordLink, a 1.
4 GW submarine interconnection system between Germany and Norway, was operational
after months of trials.
NordLink is an undersea HVDC transmission system with a capacity of 1.
4 GW connecting Norway and Germany, designed to give the German grid access to hydropower resources from Norway, which in turn can access abundant wind power resources
from Germany.
The total length of the system is 623 km, including 516 km of submarine cable and 54 km of underground cable system
.
Construction began in 2016 and trial operation began in December 2020, with the joint development of Norwegian grid operator Statnett and DC Nordseekabel, a joint venture equally owned by TenneT and German development bank KfW
.
Markus Scheer, member of the Board of Management of KfW IPEX-Bank, said: "By connecting the energy markets of Norway and Germany, we can achieve security of supply and stable energy prices, while increasing the share
of renewables in the energy mix.
”
According to the plan, the two parties will hold a commissioning ceremony on May 27, 2021, when NordLink submarine cable will be officially put into commercial operation
