[ Focus on Chemical Machinery and Equipment Network ] On the afternoon of October 27, 2020, the first professional skill competition for non-destructive testing personnel of special equipment in Jiangsu Province, co-sponsored by Jiangsu Market Supervision Bureau and other departments, officially kicked off in Nanjing.
Compared with professional competitions such as sports and games that have received much attention, skill competitions in the field of non-destructive testing appear to be unknown.
Since the 2011* National Non-destructive Testing Skills Competition, professional competitions in the field of non-destructive testing have been successfully held for many times.
Although there is no public attention, for the testing industry, every competition is a grand event for industry technical exchanges.
It plays an important role in improving the professional and technical level of testing personnel and strengthening the safety of special equipment.

Non-destructive testing is always associated with special equipment.
Special equipment refers to professional equipment involving life safety and greater risk, including: boilers, pressure vessels , pressure pipes, elevators, cranes , passenger ropeways, large amusement facilities, and motor vehicles in the factory.
The operation risk of special equipment is relatively high, so its quality and safety are particularly important.
Non-destructive testing can use sound, light, magnetism and other physical radiation to detect structural abnormalities or defects on the surface and internal of the object without destroying the test object.
On the one hand, non-destructive testing will not cause damage to special equipment and cause new safety risks; on the other hand, it can also reduce the difficulty and workload of testing.
Therefore, it has become an important testing method for special equipment and civil engineering and other industries.

There are many types of non-destructive testing.
This skill competition will set up 4 items of ultrasonic testing, radiographic testing, magnetic particle testing, and three* in total.
Ultrasonic testing, radiographic testing and magnetic particle testing are also common and widely used non-destructive testing methods.
In addition, there are eddy current testing, penetrant testing, and infrared testing.

Ultrasonic testing technology uses ultrasonic waves to inspect the internal defects of the workpiece, finds defects through ultrasonic echo signals and judges the location, size, and nature of the defects.
Ultrasonic testing has faster detection speed and higher accuracy, which can adapt to different environments.
The principle of ray detection is that rays will be attenuated when transmitted in different media or different structures, and the status of special equipment can be detected by analyzing the attenuation.
Magnetic particle detection is based on the fact that there are problems such as cracks, inclusions, etc.
After the magnetization of the metal workpiece, there will be a magnetic field leakage phenomenon, and magnetic particle adsorption will occur.
Therefore, the problem location of the equipment can be judged by the distribution of magnetic powder.

As an emerging detection technology, non-destructive testing has developed rapidly in modern industry and its application scope has been continuously expanded.
Although the development prospects are good, there are still many problems in my country's non-destructive testing industry.
According to a questionnaire survey conducted by the China Special Equipment Inspection Association in May this year, my country's non-destructive testing institutions are currently mainly private, the industry's overall informatization level is not high, and the company's scale is generally small.
In recent years, domestic non-destructive testing has developed rapidly, and the number of testing institutions has grown rapidly, but at the same time, it is also facing the problems of overcapacity in the industry, fierce market competition, and huge pressure on enterprise survival and operation.

Moreover, with the development of modern industry, the materials and structures of special equipment are also constantly improving.
Non-destructive testing must keep pace with the times to keep up with the development needs of the special equipment industry.
This poses a huge challenge to the technical level and innovation capabilities of testing institutions.

For non-destructive testing organizations, improving their technical capabilities and service quality is the only way to enhance their competitiveness and anti-risk capabilities, and it is also an inevitable requirement for the non-destructive testing industry to adapt to the development of the special equipment industry.
