German and Dutch grid operator TenneT has signed a cable contract with Nkt High-Voltage Cable to supply underground and subsea DC cables
for its offshore wind farm connection system, BorWin5.
It is understood that BorWin5 is the 15th offshore grid connection system realized by TenneT in the North Sea of Germany, and the 12th DC cable connection system, with a total length of about 230 kilometers, which is the longest submarine DC connection system
to date.
BorWin5 is the second project after DolWin5, in which wind turbines are directly connected to the offshore platform BorWin epsilon
via a 66 kV three-phase power cable.
This eliminates the substations
previously required for every wind farm.
In addition, 155 kV three-phase current cables are no longer required to connect
the TenneT offshore platform to the wind farm.
TenneT uses low-loss DC technology to transmit power to the Garrel/East converter station on land via a 230 km long ultra-high voltage DC cable
.
Here, direct current is converted back to three-phase alternating current and fed into the ultra-high voltage grid
