The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) revealed yesterday that the country has laid more than 50,000 kilometers of intercity fibre optic network
across the country.
At a one-day Nigerian broadband deployment stakeholder seminar in Lagos, relevant departments and enterprises expressed their opinions on the current status of Nigeria's broadband infrastructure, saying that Nigeria's current international submarine cable bandwidth is sufficient, but the utilization rate is low, mainly because of weak telecommunications infrastructure, especially the "last mile" deployment is not in place
.
NCC has taken steps to drive nationwide broadband infrastructure deployment to ensure affordable high-speed network operation
.
Currently, NCC is working to license InfraCos on a regional basis to provide urban fiber and data transmission services
in a non-discriminatory, open access and price-regulated manner.
The Commission also favours strengthening market competition, improving consumer choice and setting price caps for leased transmission capacity to address anticompetitive pricing
.
The main objective of the National Broadband Plan is to increase broadband penetration in all geopolitical regions of the country
