French cable giant Nexans has signed contracts with Danish renewable energy companies Ørsted and Eversource to install and protect output cables
for the Revolution wind farm in the United States.
The project aims to connect wind farms to onshore grids and help Connecticut and Rhode Island meet their ongoing commitment
to offshore wind.
As part of the framework agreement with Ørsted-Eversource, this will be Nexans' first cable installation project
in the United States.
Nexans signed an output cable framework agreement with Danish renewable energy company Ørsted North America in December 2019, which provides an opportunity to supply up to 1,000 kilometers of high-voltage submarine cable in the United States by 2027, aiming to provide the United States with industry-leading submarine cable technology by bringing Nexans
。
The contract is the first project
delivered under this agreement.
The 704-megawatt Revolution offshore wind farm, located 15 miles south of the Rhode Island coast and 32 miles southeast of the Connecticut coast, will meet the energy needs of both states, providing power
to up to 350,000 homes in Connecticut and Rhode Island.
This historic project will remove nearly 1 million tons of carbon pollution, equivalent to taking more than 210,000 cars off the road
.
According to the plan, the project will start construction in 2023 and is expected to be fully operational
in 2025.
The Nexans Aurora, which will be used for installation, is the first vessel of its kind in the field of offshore cable laying
.
Its 75-ton specially designed cable winch offers market-leading cable installation capability for cable installation in deep water of 2,000 meters and beyond
.
With a cable payload capacity of 10,000 tons, Nexans recently expanded Aurora's installation capacity, allowing simultaneous laying and protection, and reaching higher burial depths
with minimal environmental impact.
The vessel has excellent shallow water capabilities and can carry out cable landing operations
close to the shore.
"We are committed to the long-term growth of the U.
S.
offshore wind industry and look forward to partnering
with Ørsted and Eversource on this historic project," Nexans said.
We have made strategic investments to expand our presence in the U.
S.
and provide high-voltage submarine cables
manufactured and installed in the U.
S.
This contract strengthens our ability to provide turnkey solutions in the U.
S.
and support the supply chain
with strong local partners.
As a global leader in cabling solutions for offshore wind production, Nexans is proud to support the great work we are doing in clean energy and deliver on our commitment
to electrify the future and accelerate the energy industry to net-zero emissions.
