Nexans has been awarded a special project from the French Public Investment Bank to install two superconducting DC cables
near the Montparnasse station in Paris.
This is the first time such cables have been integrated into a rail network, and with its revolutionary technology, this superconducting DC cable will help protect the grid system
at a time when rail traffic in megacities is growing.
Completed in Paris in 1840, the Gare Montparnasse is the fourth largest railway station in France, with more than 50 million passengers per year and is expected to exceed 90 million passengers
by 2030.
As a result, SNCF, France's state-run railway company, will need more electricity to run more and more trains
.
Superconducting cable technology will help provide more power
needed to meet the growing demand for rail traffic.
In this critical project, superconducting cables will provide the performance
required by SNCF by installing them in existing pipes and only superconducting cables can combine reduced diameter and excellent power.
This also enables customers to save significant implementation costs associated with infrastructure retrofits, avoid potential disruptions to rail and road traffic, and limit risks
in terms of execution time and commissioning dates.
Superconducting power cables offer unparalleled advantages
.
Since they have zero resistance, they transmit power with minimal power loss, helping to make the world more sustainable
.
This project perfectly illustrates how their compact nature allows them to transmit very high power
in a limited space.
One superconducting cable can replace multiple copper cables
.
In addition, it has a very small footprint and enables high-capacity connections of 1,500 V, thus increasing the security of
power supply to the station.
"This is a world first and we are proud and delighted
to have a fruitful partnership with SNCF.
Superconducting cables provide commercial solutions to strengthen high-power grids
in all urban areas around the globe.
They are part of the future technologies developed by Nexans and provide an extremely effective solution that benefits the company and the public," said
Christopher, CEO of Nexans.
According to reports, two superconducting cables connecting the substation and the Montparnasse railway overhead line will be put into service
in 2023.
