French cable giant Nexans has won a cable contract worth about 20 million euros to provide professional nuclear-grade cables
for the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant in the UK.
According to the contract, during the six-year contract period, Nexans will design and manufacture a total of 3,000 kilometers of nuclear-grade cables for the nuclear power plant to ensure the safety, reliability and long life
of the nuclear power plant operation.
Hinkley Point C is the first nuclear power station to be built in the UK in the last 25 years, with two EPR reactors and an installed capacity of 3200 MW, enough to provide low-carbon electricity
to 6 million British households.
The construction of the nuclear power plant is a key project for the UK's energy transition and will make a significant contribution to the UK's achievement of net zero emissions, offsetting 9 million tonnes of CO2 emissions
per year over the plant's 60-year lifetime.
Nexans will provide a variety of custom-designed nuclear rated cables for the plant, including medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) power supplies, control and instrumentation cables
for pumps, valves, security systems, power supplies and control equipment.
They will be installed inside and outside
the nuclear safety zone.
It is critical that cables continue to operate safely and reliably under harsh environmental conditions corresponding to
normal, unexpected and/or post-failure plant operating conditions.
In order to meet the strictest safety standards, ENERGEN NUC halogen-free cables from Nexans meet the requirements
of European standards for fire reaction.
They will be produced
by Nexans' manufacturing facility in France.
