French cable manufacturer Nexans today announced that it has installed and commissioned high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables
for grid system supplier American Superconductors (AMSC) in the next phase of its Resilient Grid (REG) project in Chicago.
Medium-voltage cables are deployed in a permanent facility in
    Chicago.

"We are excited to use this technology to enhance the critical energy infrastructure
    in downtown Chicago," Nexans said.
The REG project affirms Nexans' position as a world leader in HTS cable technology and proves that superconductivity, high-power, medium-voltage cable technology is commercially viable
    .
We have been working with AMSC on the superconductor project for more than 18 years and are excited to continue this long-term relationship
    .
    " ”

AMSC partnered with one of the largest electric utilities in the United States to improve the resilience
    of Chicago's power grid.
The project is part of the ongoing Science and Technology Council program by the U.
    S.
    Department of
    Homeland Security.
REG superconducting cable systems help reduce accidents
such as power outages by interconnecting and sharing excess energy capacity from nearby substations to prevent high fault currents in urban areas.

Nexans designs, manufactures and mounts cables using AMSC's proprietary Amperium High Temperature (HTS) superconducting wire, which operates at 12 kV
    .
The cable carries 3000 A of AC current and can carry up to 62 MVA, far exceeding the power
that conventional resistive conductors such as copper and aluminum can withstand.

Due to its compact footprint, the cable's high current capacity is ideal for densely populated and crowded urban areas
    .
With no local heating or magnetic field, the REG system also has little
    environmental impact.
Nexans has successfully deployed cable designs in the past, such as the one used in the AmpaCity project in Essen, Germany, a 1-kilometer HTS cable to strengthen the medium-voltage grid
    that serves the city.

The connection of HTS cables and REG systems is manufactured at Nexans' specialized superconductor plant in Hanover, Germany
    .
    The two terminals were designed
    at Calais factory in Nexans.
AMSC managed the project and provided the liquid nitrogen refrigeration system as well as Amperium HTS filament
