French cable manufacturer Nexans said it will supply submarine power cables and related components
for the Northwester 2 offshore wind farm in Belgium.
Specifically, Nexans has signed a supply contract with Parkwind, a developer of a 219-megawatt Northwester 2 offshore wind farm, to design, manufacture and test subsea power output cables
for offshore wind farms.
The Northwester 2 wind farm, which includes 23 turbines, will be the seventh wind farm to be built off the Belgian coast and the first offshore wind farm
in the world to install a record 9.
5 MW V164 turbine produced by MHI Vestas.
Northwester 2 is expected to be fully operational
in the first half of 2020.
It is reported that Nexans will supply it with a three-core HVAC cable with a rated voltage of 220 kV, using the most advanced XLPE insulation material, which will be tested and debugged
by the Nexans Norwegian team.
The submarine cable will be produced at Nexans' plant in Halden, Norway, in early 2019, while the accessories will be delivered
at the plant in Cortailod, Switzerland.
The Northwester 2 wind farm is expected to make a significant contribution to climate and energy policy in Europe, saving around 500,000 tonnes of carbon per year and providing enough electricity
for around 220,000 Belgian households.
The Belgian government has adopted an aggressive "nuclear phase-out" strategy, planning to meet energy demand
through offshore wind farms.
The country already has four offshore wind farms that generate 871 megawatts of electricity and hopes to increase capacity to 2.
2 GW by 2020 and 4 GW
by 2030.
