French cable manufacturer Nexans recently said it will supply 800 kilometers of underground cables
to the 443-megawatt Viking wind farm in Shetland.
Under the SSE Renewables contract, Nexans will supply the wind farm with inter-array cables, as well as an outlet cable to feed power to the main substation to be incorporated into the interconnection system, which will be transmitted to the UK grid
.
The Viking wind farm will consist of 103 wind turbines located around the central mainland of the Shetland Islands, 170km off the coast of Scotland, and is expected to be operational
by 2024.
The cables will be produced at Nexans Hellas plant in Lamia, Greece, with first deliveries
scheduled for September 2021.
Derek Hastings, head of onshore projects at SSE Renewables, said one of the reasons for choosing Nexans was its ability to offer fixed prices over an 18-month contract period, which solves the current volatility of metal and plastic pricing
.
Max Williams, Nexans UK Utility Sales Director, said that Nexans will supply 650 kilometers of underground cables for the project, with a single-core design and XLPE insulation
.
In addition, the conductors of the inter-array cables are made of aluminum, and 150 km of bare copper grounding cables
are also available.
Williams said: "We are delighted to be involved in the Viking wind farm project
.
It fits perfectly with Nexans
' ambitions for the future of electrification.
The contract builds on
our long-standing working relationship with SSE.
It also confirmed Nexans' ability to support
major UK customers with high-capacity land-based power cable projects at distribution voltages.
