Nexans has been awarded a framework contract worth more than 650 million euros to supply undersea high-voltage DC cables
to Italian grid operator Terna.
According to reports, the required cable will be used in Italy's Tyrrhenian Link project, which is laid in a water
depth of more than 2,000 meters between Sardinia and Sicily.
Under the contract, Nexans will design, produce, manufacture and install 500 kV subsea HVDC impregnated cables
up to 500 km.
The project, the first to connect the two islands and the Italian mainland's power grid, will help increase power exchange capacity and support the development of
renewable energy.
For installation, Nexans plans to use its recently launched cable-laying vessel, the Nexans Aurora, which can operate at water depths of more than 2,000 meters and support a cable payload
of 10,000 tons.
The French company added that more projects
in the region are expected to be announced as it seeks to play an important role in improving grid infrastructure throughout the Mediterranean.
