The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has revealed that 1,600 km of fibre
has been installed across the country under the Fibre Optic Backbone Expansion Project.
NTA launched the project in 2012 with the goal of expanding the fiber network within two years, but only 46.
16% of the work
was completed by mid-July 2021.
Nepal Telecom (NT) signed an agreement in September 2016 as the lead contractor for work in the first three provinces, followed by a similar contract with UTL in April 2017 for Province 4 (Gandaki) and Province 5, and in September 2017 with Smart Telecom for Province 6 (Karnali) and Province 7
.
After the two companies failed to make any meaningful progress, NTA cancelled the Smart and UTL contracts in 2019 and awarded additional responsibility for provinces 6 and 7 to NT in October of that year (authorities have yet to appoint new developers for provinces 4 and 5).
