Morocco plans to meet 50 per cent of its electricity demand with renewable energy sources by 2030 and 100 per cent by 2050
.
According to 2019 data, renewable energy accounts for about 35% of the country's
electricity demand.
At the end of 2019, Morocco had 736 MW of solar power
.
The overall renewable energy production capacity is 3,264 MW
.
Going forward, as solar becomes more cost-competitive, solar will take on a greater responsibility
for the growth of renewable energy.
Another major source of new energy capacity and production will be wind energy
.
Morocco has a lot of natural wind resources and electricity potential
.
A new report by the UAE-based Middle East Solar Energy Industry Association (MESIA) argues that "Morocco is one of
the most advanced countries to successfully develop and execute a renewable energy strategy.
" ”
Since Morocco supported and signed the Paris Agreement, Morocco's efforts to develop green policies have increased
rapidly.
The country is committed to implementing a renewable energy strategy and, despite some uncertainty brought about by COVID19, is expected to achieve its 2020 target as well as its ultimate goal of producing 52% of its electricity
from renewable sources.
In addition, as in other countries, the rapid growth of additional electricity from renewable sources has also raised the problem of integration with the grid, and Morocco is increasingly seeking smart digital solutions
.
Overall, Morocco is taking more rational steps towards its goal
of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2050.
