Basslink, the only submarine cable connecting mainland Australia to Tasmania, will reportedly resume service at the end of May 2018 instead of April due to disruptions to planned maintenance work at Basslink Interconnection
.
Maintenance failure Basslink submarine cable will resume service in May
During routine maintenance at the Victorian converter station, a third-party contractor damaged a piece of equipment that needed to be repaired
using overseas expertise and equipment before the submarine cable could start operating again.
It is claimed that the high-voltage system in one of the equipment in the converter station has been repaired, and it is now necessary to use special tools to re-pressurize
the equipment.
Over the past week, Basslink submarine cable operators have been in contact with manufacturing partners to develop repair and repressurization procedures, provide the necessary personnel and equipment, and identify all relevant logistics
.
While discussions around these aspects are continuing, based on the latest information, the expected resumption date has been revised to May 31
, 2018.
The failure only affected the power interconnection, while the Basslink telecommunications cable, which provides broadband services to Internet service providers, continued to operate
.
The disruption is not related
to the December 2015 cut-off and ongoing disputes in Tasmania.
