● BASF's simulation technology optimizes load behavior, enabling plastics to replace metal materials
● All-plastic brackets made with BASF material solution Ultramid® have improved noise, vibration and harshness (NVH)
● This innovative material solution can reduce the weight of automotive structural parts by 50%, thereby increasing energy efficiency
May 12, 2021 - BASF and MAHLE AG, a leading international supplier of automotive components for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), have joined forces to manufacture BASF's innovative material solution Ultramid® A3WG10 polyamide (PA) commercialized plastic derailleur carrier
.
BASF's Ultramid® A3WG10 is a special high-fill material solution for chassis and structural parts
.
In addition, BASF supports MAHLE with its proprietary simulation technology Ultrasim®, which effectively reduces trial and error during the development phase
.
Sanghae Suh, Director of BU2 KR at MAHLE, said: “Because automotive components are subjected to various dynamic and static loads during driving, the brackets must withstand the same loads as conventional metal materials.
Ultramid® has excellent mechanical properties, so We were able to replace the entire structural part from metal to Ultramid®
.
The transmission carrier was MAHLE's first global launch for structural applications, and BASF's strong support helped us successfully enter the market
.
"
An innovative plastic transmission carrier made of BASF's lightweight high-performance plastics can reduce the weight by 50 percent, improving energy efficiency and the sustainability of vehicle drives, while the injection molding process simplifies the manufacturing process
.
In addition, Ultramid® has excellent damping properties, improving the NVH of the part for a more comfortable driving experience
.
"Our cooperation with MAHLE on this project is a good example of BASF's ability to co-create new applications with customers with advanced material solutions and technical support," said Zhiqiang Long, Global Vice President, Performance Materials Transportation, Asia Pacific, BASF.
