Transport for London (TFL) will implement a new ordinance from 1 January 2018, requiring all new taxis in London to be zero-emission capable
.
This follows the launch of the first extended-range electric black cab
by the end of 2017.
In the second half of this year, the Coventry taxi factory, built at the request of Transport for London, will be completed and new cars will be put into production
in the future.
Previous reports said that the car is a hybrid car, and the latest news said that the car will be modeled after the Opel Ampera and BMW i3 extended range version models, with a range extender
.
It is reported that the details of the new car will be kept secret until it is announced at the end of next year
.
However, Transport for London revealed at the London Motor Show that the new car is an extended-range electric vehicle
.
London Taxi said the car met the requirements but was silent on details about the new car, with final data to be made available to the public
after testing.
LTC Chairman Peter Johansen further pointed out that the new car only needs to be charged once a day
.
"Taxi drivers drive 150-200 miles (241-32 kilometers) a day, so our philosophy is to charge once a day to meet the driver's battery
needs for a day," he said.
He said that traditional electric vehicles have a lot of charging times and lack fast charging facilities, so it is necessary
to launch extended-range electric taxis.
Li Shufu, the chairman of Geely, had this idea
back in 2013 when he bought London Taxi.
However, due to the current underinvestment, the 150 fast-charging facilities originally scheduled for construction in London have been reduced to 75.
