LANXESS and BP collaborate on green plastics

At a press conference in Fakuma, LANXESS announced a strategic partnership with BP

The energy company will supply sustainably produced cyclohexane to its Lanxess plant in Antwerp, Belgium, starting in the fourth quarter of this year

The sustainability of cyclohexane has been certified by ISCC Plus, a constant among all elements of LANXESS' mass balance approach towards "more sustainable plastics"

BP reportedly uses bio-based and bio-recycled feedstocks such as rapeseed oil or biomass to produce "green" cyclohexane
.
LANXESS will use cyclohexane as a precursor for PA6 production
.

At the press conference, Jan Bender, Head of Marketing for the Performance Materials business unit EMEA, introduced the LANXESS Scopeblue product portfolio

Products bearing the Scopeblue brand logo either contain at least 50% recycled raw materials (bio-based or recycled) or have at least a 50% lower carbon footprint than conventional products

A PA6 compound made from 92% sustainable raw materials - Durethan BlueBKV60H2.

In addition to sustainable cyclohexane, Durethan Blue BKV is reinforced with glass fibers made from industrial glass waste

Bender emphasizes that all the raw materials used for the PA6 precursors are chemically identical to their fossil fuel cousins

Therefore, according to LANXESS, Durethan Blue BKV has the same properties as conventional materials and can be processed without changing tools or production methods

Possible applications for the material include car front ends, brake pedals and oil pans
