The plant, owned by state-run Kenya Power Generation Company (KenGen) and built by Japan's Marubeni Corporation, is expected to be completed
in 2021.

The government estimates that electricity demand will grow at an annual rate of 9% by 2021 before falling to 7%.

Kenya Power Generation plans to add 1,745 megawatts of geothermal power by 2025 as part of the government's push for the end of fossil fuels and an industrialisation push to provide jobs for its young population
