NTT Japan will install an optical fiber network on the Izu Islands and start high-speed Internet access
of up to 1 gigabit per second in 2017.
As part of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's five villages and six islands for the improvement of information and communication infrastructure, Izu-Kushima including Oshima, Miyake Island, and Hachijojima Island can already use high-speed Internet access services
.
The local government also plans to install a fiber-optic network for islanders to attract more tourists, telemedicine, and disaster prevention information to improve the convenience of
life on the island.
NTT East plans to spend four to five years laying submarine cables
in Toshima, Shinjima, Shikinejima, Kanzushima Island, Gozojima, and Aoshima.
In 2016, the first phase was to overhaul the optical fiber network
on Miyake Island-Mizojima-Kozushima Island.
Construction of some land lines began in September this year, and submarine cable
laying began in October.
The budget is 2.
5 billion yen
.
After the second phase, the total operating cost of the fourth phase is expected to exceed 9.
2 billion yen
by laying the optical fiber network in the order of (1) Kanzushima - Shinegashima - Niijima (2) Niijima - Toshima, (3) Hachijojima - Aoshima.
NTT East laid optical fiber networks on Oshima Island and Hachijo Island in 2004 and Miyake Island in 2011 so that people on the island can use high-speed Internet
.
The other six islands use telephone lines and microwave ADSL.
It is reported that the line will be fiber-based, and the communication speed will be increased by more than 100 times
.
With ADSL, the transmission rate is 1Mb/s, and a movie takes 3.
5 hours to download, while if you upgrade to a fiber optic network, you can download a movie
in as little as 12 seconds.
Mizojima Village plans to complete the laying of optical fibers by mid-2016 to provide high-speed Internet access to islanders
.
NTT East installed communication equipment
for the village through a lease operation contract.
It is reported that other islands will also use the same service
.
The Izu Islands have a warm climate and high transparency, surrounded by the sea, and are centered on sightseeing and fishing
.
The total population of the nine islands is about 18,000, and the population of the six new islands is 5,400, and the population is likely to
continue to decline.
If high-speed Internet is used, the communication environment such as video viewing is expected to be further improved
.
In addition, infrastructure such as telemedicine and disaster prevention information can be reorganized
.
Telework will also be possible and contribute
to immigration.
