The Japanese government on Tuesday unveiled a plan to require municipalities to collect all types of plastic waste from household waste for recycling
.
The plan, which aims to make it easier for residents to sort plastic waste and increase the recycling of such waste, was agreed by a majority of members at a joint meeting of an expert panel from the Ministry of Environment and Economy
.
The Japanese government is considering new legislation to implement the plan
.
Currently, more than 70 percent of municipalities in Japan collect plastic containers and packaging, including plastic bags, food trays and shampoo bottles
.
Other plastic products including toothbrushes, stationery and washbasins are classified as combustible or non-combustible waste and are incinerated or buried
.
Some experts in Japan say the current collection system is cumbersome because only plastic containers and packaging are considered recyclable waste
.
Collecting all types of plastic waste makes it easier to sort
.
With the exception of large waste and small appliances, all plastic products will be collected as recyclable waste
.
According to an analysis by Japan's Ministry of the Environment and other relevant ministries, 66% of household plastic waste is containers and packaging, 18% is plastic bottles, and 16% is other plastic products that fall into designated categories
.
The Japanese government is also proposing to encourage voluntary collection and recycling by manufacturers and sellers of plastic products, mainly for small and everyday product collections at home and elsewhere
.
