The Jamaican government has received a donation of 650 kilometers of fibre optic cable from local cable service providers and the island's two main toll road operators to help improve broadband connectivity in the country
.
Local cable operators include the island's two largest cable operators and 34 smaller rural cable operators
.
Michael Saunderson, head of operations for the National Works Bureau's Traffic Management Division, said the fiber-optic cable will be part of the nation's fiber-optic communications backbone to enable high-speed data services
between public government agencies.
He explained that the national fibre optic communications backbone is part of the government's response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and will be used to connect important government agencies, including hospitals, schools, ports, airports and medical centers
.
"The laying of the fiber-optic cable between Morant Bay and Montego Bay is expected to be completed
in early January 2021.
Once operational, we can enable the parish councils of Morant Bay and Montego Bay to communicate
with the central government.
”
He noted that the national fiber-optic communications backbone will also support the rollout of public hotspots
in rural areas.
"Currently, we have 13 hotspots
in the urban area.
Through the National Fibre Communications Backbone, we can reach rural communities and give more Jamaicans access to the Internet
.
”
Through the project, the government will seek to increase the number of public Wi-Fi hotspots from 13 to 30 within 6 months
