BP plans to build
The UK's largest blue hydrogen project
BP announced today that it is working on plans for the UK's largest blue hydrogen production facility, with a target of producing 1GW of hydrogen
by 2030.
The project will capture and transport up to 2 million tons of carbon dioxide
per year.
BP has begun a feasibility study on the project to explore technologies
that could capture up to 98% of carbon emissions from the hydrogen production process.
The project's hydrogen output could provide clean energy for industry and residential use, which could be used as a fuel for heavy transportation and support the generation of sustainable fuels, including biofuels and e-fuels
.
The project will be developed in phases and will have an initial production capacity of 500MW of blue hydrogen by 2027 or earlier, with more capacity
deployed by 2030 as industrial clusters decarbonize and hydrogen demand accelerates.
BP believes that hydrogen demand in Teesside will increase
further after 2030.
