Four different polymers from Dupont have won the 2016 Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Automotive Innovation Award, including DuPontTM Delrin® acetal and DuPontTM Crastin PBT resins for automotive body and exterior casings, key mechanical transmissions and chassis components, and DuPontTM Zytel® Plus nylon and DuPontTM for high heat resistance in powertrain systems Zytel?HTN PPA
.
Delrin and Crastin are applied to the gears and housings of the front camera unfolding device hidden behind the
car's logo, respectively.
In this exterior application, several engineering plastics were used to replace the large and heavy metal housings and components commonly used on extendable cameras to avoid deformation and vibration
of the car logo while driving.
In addition, Delrin® homopolymer acetal resin is used in protective articulated plastic door edge protectors, which can be deployed when the door is opened to avoid damage
to the door or adjacent vehicles.
By reducing door (edge) recesses, a total of approximately $1.
5 million in loss from such vehicle maintenance can be saved annually, while also reducing approximately $500,000 in consequential losses
during vehicle transportation.
