Dow's new impact modifier helps rigid PVC materials expand their applications
Recently, Dow Chemical (DOW) Plastic Additives Division has successfully developed PARALOIDTM HIA-80, an acrylate impact modifier for transparent polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which can impart excellent impact resistance and weather resistance to rigid PVC materials, further expanding the application field of rigid PVC materials, making it expected to be used as transparent decorative diaphragm materials or building panels
.
Hard PVC materials are brittle, and the current application in the field of building materials is still limited to pipes, profiles, etc
.
In order to meet the requirements of various downstream application environments, PVC often needs to add impact modifiers
.
Commonly used core-shell impact modifiers mainly include acrylates (AIM) and methyl methacrylate-butadiene-styrene terpolymer (MBS).
Although MBS has excellent transparency, but because the molecular structure contains double bonds, it is easy to age and turn yellow when exposed to sunlight or outdoors, and the PVC material modified by it is mainly used in the packaging field without weather resistance requirements; Although the AIM class has good weather resistance, it is only suitable for opaque fields
.
PARALOIDTM HIA-80 can make PVC transparent diaphragm have excellent weather resistance and good impact resistance, and can be made into decorative diaphragm materials
with better surface gloss, more durable, more flexible pattern design and more beautiful appearance.
Compared to other AIM impact modifiers, this impact modifier has a more beautiful spherical shape, a more uniform particle size, and better
processability.
In addition, PVC transparent sheet modified by PARALOIDTM HIA-80 has various properties close to traditional transparent polycarbonate (PC) board and impact performance better than polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and its raw material cost is only about 1/3 of PC or PMMA, so it is expected to become a better cost-effective choice
in the future.
