On December 16, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) said it had added seven new substances of very high concern (SVHC) to the list of candidate substances authorized by the EU REACH regulation
.
ECHA says the candidate list already includes 151 substances
so far.
The seven substances added to the candidate list are: cadmium sulfide, di-n-hexyl phthalate (DNHP), Congo red (C.
I.
Direct Red 28), direct black BN (C.
I.
DIRECT BLACK 38), ethylene thiourea, lead acetate and tris(xylene) phosphate
.
ECHA said cadmium sulfide was added to the list because it is a carcinogen and is also thought to have a potentially serious impact on human health (especially for kidneys and bones).
Congo red and direct black BN are due to their carcinogenicity, while DNHP, ethylene thiourea, lead acetate and tris(xylene) phosphate are due to their reproductive toxicity
.
