Honeywell UOP today announced that Columbia Biofuels uses Green Jet FuelTM, a green jet fuel produced through its UOP renewable aviation fuel process,
for its first commercial flight.
A 174-passenger LAN Airlines A320 Airbus plane arrived in Cali from Bogotá International Airport in Colombia, with one of its engines loaded with a mix of 30/70 Honeywell green and conventional coal
.
The loaded renewable fuel is kale, a non-edible natural crop that can survive
on land where crops cannot grow.
The voyage marks the first commercial flight
in Colombia using biofuels.
The UOP renewable aviation fuel process is fully compatible
with the hydrotreatment process technologies available in today's refineries to produce transportation fuels.
According to different raw materials, Honeywell green jet coal can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65%~85%
compared with traditional jet coal.
Each gallon of kale-based Honeywell green jet coal reduces net CO2 emissions equivalent by approximately 68%
compared to conventional jet coal.
Balanced to 50-50 with conventional jet coal, Honeywell Green Jet Coal requires no changes to flight technology and meets all key flight metrics
simultaneously.
"As an alternative energy source, Honeywell Green Jet Coal can help us cope with increasingly stringent emissions standards and flight regulations
.
Jim Rekoske, vice president and general manager of UOP's Renewable Energy & Chemicals Division, said, "We look forward to providing more sustainable energy solutions to help Colombia realize its enormous raw material production potential
.
