Recently, the U.
S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommended banning the use of chlorpyrifos in the
United States.
The EPA said the recommendation will be subject to public comment for at least two months, with a final outcome expected in December 2016 and effective
as early as 2017.
Chlorpyrifos is a highly effective and low-toxicity organophosphorus insecticide used on a range of crops, including citrus, apples, cherries, grapes, cauliflower and asparagus
.
Since its introduction in 1965, and especially in recent years, chlorpyrifos has caused illness
in many farm workers.
In addition, researchers have also found traces of chlorpyrifos in the canals, threatening the survival
of fish.
Regulators say excessive use of chlorpyrifos can lead to resistance to target pests
