Petronas has partnered with LanzaTech to develop CO2 conversion technology
LanzaTech, a manufacturer of low-carbon fuels and chemicals from waste gas, has signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) with Petronas to accelerate the development and commercialization of technologies for the production of sustainable chemicals from carbon dioxide (CO2) and natural gas
.
LanzaTech's proprietary fermentation process converts industrial waste, converted natural gas and carbon monoxide (CO) from any biomass gas into low-carbon fuels and chemicals
.
The collaboration will expand the fermentation technology to the CO2 field and aims to produce acetic acid
, a high-value chemical widely used in the polymer and plastics markets, from refinery exhaust gas and natural gas.
The collaboration will leverage Petronas' extensive experience and significant assets in the petroleum industry and LanzaTech gas fermentation technology to develop economically sustainable sources of
high-value chemicals.
Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech, said: "This collaboration aims to 'bury' carbon into chemicals
, rather than the traditional sequestration of carbon deep into the soil.
In the process, companies not only meet emission reduction requirements, but also generate revenue
.
This is expected to fundamentally change the way waste CO2 is disposed of and will have a significant impact on
carbon capture.
