Brazil strictly limits the use of acetylmethamidophos
The Brazilian Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) has published the results of an evaluation of acetylmethamidophos products, including certain application types and crop types
that are no longer allowed for use.
According to Regulation RDC45/2013, acetylmethamidophos is not allowed to be used in greenhouses (manual or backpack spraying), nor for use in homes and gardens
.
The new rules also prohibit its use in carnations, chrysanthemums, tobacco, bell peppers, fresh tomato crops
.
Before the registration of alternative pesticides, acetylmethamidophos can be applied to cauliflower, kale, broccoli, cabbage
.
ANVISA will prioritize applications
for registration of substitute products from the above-mentioned crops.
In the other 8 crops, the product can continue to be used
.
In addition, acetylmethamidophos pesticides can only be sold in water-soluble packaging to avoid direct contact
with farmers.
From January 31, 2015, this packaging will be the only acceptable commercial packaging
.
Companies are also required to provide farmers with brochures
about the risks of the substance.
