The U.
S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced 50 new chemicals to the Safer Chemical Ingredient List (SCIL), including 40 fragrance chemicals
.
SCIL was founded in September 2012 and currently has about 650 chemicals, including more than 150 fragrance chemicals
.
The EPA says SCIL was created to provide resources for manufacturers interested in making safer products, health and environmental advocates are seeking to encourage the use of safer chemicals, and consumers are seeking information
about the composition of safer chemicals.
SCIL also provides manufacturers with product guidelines for environmental design (DfE) labeling, which are manufactured to meet EPA scientific standards
.
Some 2,500 products are currently certified safer according to the DfE standard, including multi-purpose cleaners, laundry and dishwasher detergents, window cleaners, automotive and marine care products, and many others
.
