Tepex dynalite, a composite material from Bond-Laminates, a subsidiary of Lanxess, was used by skywalk to create pedals
in the Range X-Alps paraglider control system in a race that required athletes to paraglide and hike through the Alps.
The pedal is made of a sandwich composite material with a thickness of only 1 cm, including an ultra-thin Tepex surface layer with a thickness of only 0.
5 mm, and a polypropylene honeycomb core
made of EconCore N.
V.
Tepex dynalite is a continuous fiber-reinforced composite based on polypropylene, the pedals made of this material can easily carry large loads, the thickness of the surface material and the honeycomb core determine that the bending stiffness and bending strength of this sandwich structure can be better than steel or aluminum sheets, but it is much
lighter.
At the same time, the sandwich sheet is 20% lighter than the previous sheet made of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy, so the weight of the control system using the sandwich composite material is just over
1 kg.
Another advantage of Tepex composites is its low cost: the cost of a new component is only 75%
of that of epoxy.
This sandwich structure also presents significant opportunities in the production of lightweight vehicles, especially in large components where high intensity is required, such as the trunk floor, fuel tank cover, electric vehicle range extender housing, structural battery housing and seat assembly
.
