Shell will hold a stake in waste-to-fuel plants
According to recent news from foreign media, Shell will hold a 40% stake
in a waste-to-fuel plant that uses technology developed by Enerkem, Canada's leading cleantech company.
It is understood that the facility has a commercial scale of about 875 million Canadian dollars ($686 million) and will be built
in Valennes, Quebec.
It will leverage Enerkem's proprietary technology to produce low-carbon fuels and renewable chemicals
from non-recyclable waste.
The first phase of the facility is scheduled to begin trial operation
in 2023.
Once completed, the plant will process more than 200,000 tons of non-recyclable and wood waste per year, producing nearly 125 million litres of low-carbon fuel
per year.
Key investments in the plant came from Shell, Enerkem, Sencor, Proman and Hydro-Quebec in Quebec, as well as the governments of
Quebec and Canada.
