Evonik and Siemens collaborate on CO2 conversion project
Evonik and SIEMENS announced today that they are planning to convert CO2 into specialty chemicals
using renewable energy sources and bacteria.
The two companies are working on a joint research project called Rheticus for electrolysis and fermentation
.
The project is scheduled to run for two years
.
The first pilot plant is scheduled to start operations in 2021 at the Evonik plant in Marl, Germany, producing chemicals
such as butanol and hexanol.
The next phase could be a plant with a capacity of up to 20,000 tons, or other specialty chemicals or fuels
.
In this joint project, Siemens is providing electrolysis technology, which is the first step
in using electricity to convert carbon dioxide and water into hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
Evonik focuses on fermentation, which converts CO-containing gases into useful products
through metabolism with the help of special microorganisms.
