Bayer MaterialScience will present the latest developments in coating formulations and applications
Bayer, a leading supplier of raw materials for high-performance polyurethane coatings and adhesives, will present three presentations at the European Coatings Conference (ETCC) at the Gürzenich Hotel in Cologne, Germany, on September 3~5, 2014, focusing on the latest sustainability achievements
in coating formulations and applications.
The presentations covered the use of bio-based raw materials to make more sustainable coatings, polyaspartate floor coatings to achieve higher production efficiency, and the use of catalysts to improve application applications
.
Dr.
Gesa Behnken, head of Bayer MaterialScience's Top Ten research team, said that using bio-based raw materials to make more sustainable coatings can further enhance the sustainability of products and increase social acceptance, while further reducing the carbon footprint
.
Advances in biotechnology have opened up more possibilities
for its more frequent use.
More importantly, this progress has made available many substances that were previously unavailable from petrochemical resources
.
Bio-based substances therefore open up completely new opportunities
for product formulation.
A new low-viscosity polyaspartic ester presented during the ETCC conference cures quickly at room temperature and can be used with existing product combinations such as Desmophen NH 1420, which also significantly improves the balance
between hardness and flexibility of floor coatings.
Experts in the team of Dr.
Matthias Wintermantel of Bayer are currently working on the further use of polyaspartic esters to improve floor coatings
.
In addition, Bayer experts will present the latest achievements
in the use of catalysts to improve coating applications.
Aliphatic curing agents based on hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) are ideal for
many coating applications.
However, these hardeners sometimes do not meet the needs of all users, such as their viscosity is too high or their reactivity is too low
at certain temperatures.
In these cases, targeted and controlled catalysis can achieve the desired effect
.
Michael Grahl of Bayer MaterialScience and his research team studied thermal latent catalysts
.
They concluded that key parameters such as process time and activation temperature can be precisely set
by selecting the appropriate catalyst.
This means that good curing
can be achieved without unduly limiting the mixing pot life.
