ECHA will ban triclosan The European Chemicals Administration (ECHA) recently announced that the antimicrobial pesticide triclosan
(scientific name "dichlorophenoxychlorophenol") will be phased out in hygienic applications and replaced
by more suitable alternatives due to its toxic and bioaccumulative properties.
According to ECHA, "The use of triclosan has been determined to be unsafe
after review.
Triclosan poses a risk
to surface water and the food chain (secondary poisoning).
"ECHA believes that any measures to further reduce the risk of
triclosan will be impractical.
Triclosan is an antibacterial pesticide used in cosmetics, personal care products, and treated plastics and textiles
.
It damages hormones, causes bacterial and antibiotic resistance and affects aquatic life
.
The resolution renews its call for the U.
S.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.
S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ban the sale of the pesticide
.
The EPA rejected consumer requests
to ban triclosan in May.
