BASF has announced that it will build a plant to produce battery cathode materials in Hajavalta, Finland, and enter into a supply agreement
for nickel and cobalt materials with Russian miner Norilsk Nickel.
The new plant, adjacent to Nornickel's nickel-cobalt refinery, is scheduled to start production by the end of 2020 and will produce battery materials
for about 300,000 pure electric vehicles per year.
The plan is part of BASF's €400 million investment plan and is the first step in establishing a cathode material production plant in Europe, where the company is evaluating several subsequent investment locations
.
Kenneth Lane, President of BASF's Catalysts division, said: "With its investment in the Hajavatalta region of Finland, BASF is increasingly close to local customers and will operate in all major regions to further support the fast-growing electric vehicle market
