Clariant and Siemens jointly introduce a new sulfur-resistant conversion technology for coal gasification
Clariant, a world leader in specialty chemicals, announced on May 28 that it has reached an agreement with Siemens Fuel Gasification Technologies to commercialize a new sulfur-resistant conversion (SGS) technology for coal gasification
.
For all Siemens gasification projects that include sulfur-resistant shift systems, the agreement designates Clariant as the exclusive catalyst provider
.
The partnership covers all global projects, with a particular focus on commercialization in China's fast-growing coal chemical market
.
Advanced sulphur conversion technology jointly developed by Clariant and Siemens significantly reduces the total investment cost
of coal-to-chemical and IGCC projects by optimizing and simplifying the plant-wide design.
By combining the strengths of the two companies, Siemens air-bed gasifiers (SFGs) are able to produce syngas
from a wide range of fuels and even low-rank coal.
Clariant's ShiftMax® 821 catalyst is designed to support a single-pass changeover process without further adjustment of the gasifier outlet gas composition
.
The simplified process will use smaller and fewer reactors, and will not require the addition of additional steam to regulate the temperature of
the reactor.
This reduces the operating costs of the conversion system by up to 20% and the catalyst load by 30
%.
The new technology is capable of treating syngas with different water-to-gas ratios and different carbon monoxide content, thereby increasing the availability and reliability
of the entire process.
In addition, it is a method
with inherent security.
Since no water vapor is used to control the exothermic reaction, there is no risk of
temperature runaway.
