Air Liquide has launched the world's largest hydrogen storage unit
located underground in Beaumont, Texas, Gulf Zone, USA, which further enhances Air Liquide's strong air supply capacity in the region and provides customers with greater flexibility and reliable hydrogen supply solutions
through Air Liquide's pipeline system across the Gulf Coast.
The underground hydrogen storage unit is 1,500 meters deep and has a diameter of about 70 meters
.
The plant is capable of holding enough hydrogen to support a large steam methane cracker (SMR) operating for 30 days
.
Prior to the commissioning of the new underground hydrogen storage unit, Air Liquide commissioned the first pure helium storage unit
in Germany in July 2016.
Michael Graff, Member of the Air Liquide Executive Committee and Executive Vice President, Americas, said: "Air Liquide's investment in the world's largest hydrogen storage unit is based on the boom in the refining and petrochemical markets and growing
demand for hydrogen along the US Gulf Coast.
This unique device enables us to deliver greater value
to our customers through innovative solutions.
