The EU bans the sale of consumer products containing excessive polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
On 7 December 2013, the Official Journal of the European Union published Commission Regulation (EC) No.
1272/2013 adding new provisions to the existing restrictions on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon substances (PAHs), which came into effect
on 27 December 2015.
The new rules cover a wide range of products, including toys, clothing, footwear, sporting goods and household utensils, which are prohibited from sale
in the EU if they contain restricted PAHs and will be in direct, long-term and short-term repeated contact with humans.
The new regulations limit the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon content of the plastic or rubber part that comes into contact with the article, and from the date of implementation of the regulation, the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentration of the plastic or rubber part exceeds 1 mg per kilogram shall not be placed on the market
.
In addition, given the vulnerability of children, the Commission considers that stricter concentration limits
should be set for toys and child care products.
Therefore, if the concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in plastic or rubber parts of toys and child care products exceeds 0.
5 mg/kg, they will not be placed on the market
.
