On September 14, Avient presented its MEVOPURTMProTeect oxygen absorbing additive masterbatch
at Medtec China 2020.
The MEVOPUR product range for the medical and pharmaceutical portfolio reduces the rate of oxygen degradation in PET bottles stored in pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals, even in transparent single-layer
bottles.
MEVOPURTMProTect provides active molecules
with the function of preventing oxygen from passing through the vessel walls.
With this function, oxygen levels can be kept low in refrigerated environments and in single-layer bottles
.
Compared to alternative products, MEVOPURTMProTect helps packaging achieve the storage period
of two years (or more) typically required for pharmaceutical packaging, even at a lower concentration of the active ingredient.
In addition, tests have shown that PET preforms made from this masterbatch do not require special storage conditions and retain their oxygen absorption capacity
after 3 months.
"Similar to food and beverage applications, the use of PET in pharmaceutical packaging is gradually increasing," said Steve Duckworth, head of global healthcare market and business development for Evante's Color and Additives division, "However, unlike food and beverages, pharmaceuticals typically require a shelf life
of two years or more.
High-density polyethylene (HDPE) was once the material of choice for these applications, but is now being replaced by PET, which offers good transparency in addition to its long shelf life
.
