Wageningen University in the Netherlands recently issued a communiqué that European researchers have developed a bicycle tire prototype made of natural rubber extracted from dandelion roots, which has been tested with good performance, marking new progress in the market-oriented application of dandelion rubber, which is expected to promote its mass production, thereby alleviating the EU's dependence on natural rubber imports and diversifying
the global supply of natural rubber.
Tire maker Vredestein unveiled the prototype
bicycle tire last month.
The company is one of the industrial partners of the EU dandelion rubber project "DRIVE4EU", which is coordinated
by Wageningen University.
According to the project coordinator, Dr.
Ingrid van der Meier of the Institute of Botany of Wageningen University, the project team has previously used Russian dandelion rubber to produce concept tires, and now it has cultivated a better Russian dandelion variety, with a rubber content of 17%~20%, far higher than 5% of wild Russian dandelion, and the quality of bicycle tires produced with this dandelion rubber is excellent
.
The project team is continuing to study
the mass production of dandelion rubber in Russia.
