The US state of New Jersey has introduced legislation prohibiting the sale and manufacture of personal care products
containing microplastic soft beads in the state.
According to the law, "micro-beads" refer to plastic parts
of personal care products with a size of 5 mm or less.
The ban will come into effect
on 23 March 2017 or two years after the enactment of the law.
The law states that New York, California, Michigan and other states have introduced legislation to address the environmental problems
caused by micro-beads.
These beads have been reported to contain harmful toxins that can be deposited directly in waterways through water treatment facilities, and eventually enter the human body
through fish feeding and accumulation in the food chain.
