New rubber provides solutions
for turbocharged tubes Dow Performance Silicones has introduced a new SILASTICTM fluorosilicone rubber
for automotive turbocharger tubes.
The rubber has high temperature resistance with continuous operating temperatures up to 210°C and peak temperatures up to 250°C and excellent oil resistance
.
Compared with fluorocarbon rubber, the rubber has higher elongation at break at high temperature (225 °C) and low temperature (-20 °C), stronger compression set at high temperature, good acetic acid and urea resistance, and excellent initial and continuous adhesion
to high-density rubber.
In addition, the fluorinated lining is used as a barrier to prevent the pressure pipe from coming into contact with the engine oil and causing the pipe wall to expand and rupture
.
Other potential automotive applications for SILASTICTM fluorosilicone rubber include: fuel line safety seals, fuel system seals, valves, membranes, o-rings and gaskets
.
"As environmental requirements become more stringent, the temperature of the intake system of turbocharged engines in customer applications rises dramatically, which requires high-performance turbocharger tube materials
that can withstand extreme temperatures and corrosive chemical environments," said Yang Xinjie, regional marketing manager for silicone elastomers in Greater China, Dow Performance Silicones.
