Evonik has said
that it will expand its production in Birmingham (Alabama, USA) and Darmstadt (Germany) to further increase the production of
RESOMER?Select's bioresorbable polymer series.
The expansion includes the construction of a new building near the existing Evonik plant in Birmingham, the construction of a new production cleanroom and a laboratory for the polymer outsourced research services project, which is expected to be commissioned
by the end of 2018.
In addition, Evonik will expand its production capacity by adding a production line in Darmstadt and will open an application technology laboratory
in Darmstadt at the end of 2016.
Previously, Evonik acquired methionine fermentation production technology from the French company METabolic EXplorer (METEX) for 45 million euros to further enhance its biotechnological capabilities
in amino acid production.
The transaction also resulted in a rebate license agreement for the transfer of certain specific patents to Evonik, allowing METEX to continue to use these patents
in addition to methionine-related activities.
In addition, the two companies also plan to explore the possibility of cooperating in the development of
amino acids using biotechnology.
The technology transfer service agreement lasts for two years
.
METEX believes the acquisition highlights the importance of its alternative technologies while enhancing their ability to
commercialize other technologies.
